Cultural references

• The episode's title is a pun on the song "Smoke on the Water" by Deep Purple.
• On the couch gag, Wile E. Coyote paints a fake couch on the wall which the Simpsons run into and get hurt, parodying the style of Wile E. Coyote and the Road Runner cartoons. Maggie then zooms in and says the Road Runner's catchphrase "Meep Meep!".
• The Angelica Button book series is a parody of Harry Potter.
• Milhouse had heard that Spider-Man would be in the new Angelica Button book.
• Some characters in the queue line at Bookaccino's resemble those in Harry Potter:
  • Data is wearing a golden costume, referencing the Golden Snitch.
  • Skinner is dressed as a centaur, hinting Firenze.
  • Comic Book Guy is dressed as a character similar to Rubeus Hagrid.

• No. 5 Pas de deux for Two Merry-makers from Act 1 in the ballet Swan Lake by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky is heard in the Chazz Busby Ballet Academy commercial.
• Chazz Busby's name is a reference to the famous director and choreographer of musicals Busby Berkeley and his character design is based on Joe Gideon, played by Roy Scheider, in the film All That Jazz directed by Bob Fosse.
• Lisa encourages Marge by telling her that dancer and choreographer Martha Graham danced well into her 70s.
• Homer wanted Marge to be a go-go dancer.
