Professor Hawking first visited Springfield when he heard that the local [[Mensa International|Mensa]] chapter had taken control of the city. He was hoping to see the town transformed into a perfect utopia under the leadership of the intellectual elite, but was dismayed to see it was more of a "fruitopia". Hawking said he wasn't sure which was the bigger disappointment: His own failure to formulate a unified field theory, or the Springfield intellectuals' failure to transform the town. [[Principal Skinner]] objected to the comparison, and Hawking used his chair's boxing glove to punch him.

Ms. Peyton was a teacher in Ghana for two years. However, she moved to Springfield because her husband, Darryl Peyton, got a new job as part of the Springfield Orchestra.

Before she became the new fourth grade teacher at Springfield Elementary, Ms. Peyton stayed at the resort Paradiso del Mare. Because Bart felt embarrassed about this, he yelled at Ms. Peyton and ran off. After this incident, Ms. Peyton referred to Bart as "angry drowning boy" in her head, since she didn't know his name.

When Ms. Peyton introduced herself to the other teachers, she told them that she wanted to do project-based learning with the school. At first, the other teachers weren't interested, but Ms. Peyton then revealed that she had drawn up all the lesson plans they would need. When Ms. Peyton was introduced to Bart, she didn't recognize him, but Bart recognized her. Bart then started acting up toward her because he was feeling guilty about the way he acted toward her at the pool, and he had a crush on Ms. Peyton. Due to Bart's antics, Ms. Peyton ended up calling Homer and Marge into the school to discuss Bart's behavior...
