- The sign with "abandon shivs all ye who enter here" outside the gates of Springfield Penitentiary is a reference to shivs, makeshift objects sharpen and pointed to be used like knives by inmates, and the phrase "abandon hope all ye who enter here" inscribed on the gates of hell in Dante's Inferno.
