At the Springfield Elementary Lunchroom, Lisa calls Alex to join herself, Sherri, Terri, Allison Taylor, and Janey for lunch. While Lisa offers to go get the lunch, Alex begins talking on her cell, to the shock of the other girls that Alex owns a cell phone and purse. From the counter Lisa (mock-coaching Alex) notices the girls are all laughing, and Alex showing off her outfit. When the girls leave the cafeteria, Lisa realizes they completely forgot about her. Forlornly, Lisa leaves the cafeteria. At home, she complains about Alex taking all of Lisa's friends and ditching her. Homer however, convinces her to be more like Alex. At school the next day, Alex apologises towards Lisa and gives her earrings for pierced ears, and shows she had pierced all the other girl's ears herself. When Principle Skinner walks by, Alex convinces him and the girls for a school dance.

Homer and Bart begin their grease business and make sixty-three cents worth of grease from twenty-seven dollars worth of bacon, much to their disappointment. The two continue their grease business, resuming to drive past Springfield Elementary School where Bart gazes at his former schoolmates playing. The pair drive to Krusty Burger, where they steal grease from the fryers (and consider taking some from the face of the Squeaky-Voiced Teen working there), but the grease Homer and Bart stole (and quite literally placed in the back of the car, causing Bart to tell Homer that Marge will most likely kill Homer if she ever found out that he not only stole grease, but was also dumping it in the back of the truck) is later taken by The Springfield grease and shovel company, who attempt to warn them off.

Alex convinces Principal Skinner to put on a school dance rather than the other event he had organised. Skinner agrees, so Alex and Lisa, accompanied by Sherri, Terri, Janey and Allison visit the mall to purchase party supplies. The girls soon take a detour and begin trying on outfits for the dance, despite Lisa's protests and Alex attempting to convince her it will help her get a date for the dance. The group leave the mall, none speaking to each other. Lisa wears the gothic outfit she bought at the mall, but the boys and not impressed and she finds it uncomfortable. She decides not to attend the dance, but changes her mind and goes to the school to take tickets at the door. At Springfield Mall, Lisa leads Alex, Terri, Sherri, Janey, and Allison to a party supplies store; however the girls detour to a nearby Dingo Junction. The girls quickly start dressing up for the dance, but Lisa protests, saying that they are too small to dress up sentually and wear makeup. Alex tries to convince Lisa that it is to look prettier for the dance and get a date. After Lisa convinces them she doesn't want a date, they leave the mall without another word.

Bart reveals to Homer that the school kitchen will have an enormous amount of grease - They arrive at the school during the dance to steal it. Homer sneaks into the kitchen and plants a hose in the fryer, sucking the grease into the car, but Groundskeeper Willie spots them and attempts to stop them, claiming that the grease is for his retirement. A fight ensues between the two of them after a brief argument regarding Willie's nationality. Homer tries to escape, but Willie grabs his legs and strangles him with the hose sucking the grease. Due to increased pressure the hose explodes, causing grease to fall out of the ventilation shaft into the hall where the dance is being held. A faux-snowball fight using the grease breaks out among the students, and Alex eventually joins in after being told by Lisa to act her own age.

At school, Lisa arrives dressed completely different, with a complete new Gothic personality and lip gloss. Lisa later finds out everyone is taken for the dance, including Milhouse, prompting Lisa to skip the dance. Lisa furiously tries to get Milhouse to go with her but then she realizes that she's not being herself. Marge then convinces Lisa to go, though when Lisa arrives, she doesn't enter the dance, however, but ends up checking those who would go into the dance.

Meanwhile, in the school cafeteria, Homer and Bart sneak about. Bart asks where the hose is. Opening the range, he plants the hose into a sea of grease underneath. At that moment, Willie enters. At the kitchen sink, he begins to whistle while scrubbing under his armpits with a Brillo pad and Ajax soap. Bart and Homer attempt to sneak away, but Willie notices them. At the dance, Lisa pushes open the door and looks inside. Strangely, she sees all the boys on one side, looking just as awkward as the girls, who stand together on the opposite side of the gym.  Alex comes up to her and tells her the boys and girls are awkward of dancing with one another. At that exact same moment, Willie continues to wrestle with Homer in the ventilation system.  Bart stands nearby, pointing out that the hose Willie is using to strangle Homer with has built up an enormous amount of grease behind them. The hose swells, then explodes in a fountain of grease, shooting the three through the vents. In the gymnasium, the children look up to see tiny flakes falling from one of the vents; grease being cut into pieces by the fan blades. The students below then begin having a "greaseball fight".
