Cultural references[edit]
- The episode title is a possible reference to the painting Whistler's Mother.
- Homer recreates the British accent of Michael Caine, who portrays Alfred Pennyworth, the butler of Batman (Bruce Wayne), in Batman Begins.
- Helen Lovejoy criticizes Marge's sense of style, referring to her house like visiting The Flintstones, while Santa's Little Helper passes by holding a giant bone in his mouth.
- Remy from Ratatouille, Snowball II and Thing from The Addams Family can be seen under the floor between the living room and the main bedroom.
- In his imagination, Homer whistles the 1812 Overture. After finishing, Homer "performs" the orchestral interlude "Flight of the Bumblebee", something that frustrates Maggie due to its complicated opening.
Skinner (as Tin Man), Chalmers (as Cowardly Lion) and Willie (as Scarecrow) dressed as the characters of The Wizard of Oz
- Skinner (as Tin Man), Chalmers (as Cowardly Lion) and Willie (as Scarecrow) dressed as the characters of The Wizard of Oz so Marge could paint them on the wall. Homer is also seen as the Wizard of Oz.
- Louie mentions Costco.
- At Moe's, Maggie whistles the traditional children song "Old MacDonald Had a Far".
- Abe tells of his childhood appearance on the radio show Your Blow of Blows, a reference to Your Show of Shows, a variety show which aired on television in the early 1950s.
- A young Abe whistles "Heart and Soul" by Frank Loesser and Hoagy Carmichael on Your Blow of Blows.
- Lenny is afraid that show business would ruin Maggie's career as a whistler, and compares that to Ron Howard not winning an Oscar since 2002 for A Beautiful Mind.
- At the auditions, three babies behind Chazz Busby parody The Three Stooges.
- Fat Tony mentions Chianti, a wine produced in Italy.
- Lisa mentions South Park and refers to Trey Parker when she says that he "does everything". Parker and Matt Stone do most of the writing, directing and voice acting on South Park.
- Homer mentions Sylvester Stallone and Showtime.
- On the Hot Shot Tots, the Pixie Chicks are a parody of the Dixie Chicks, an American country music band.
Continuity[edit]
- Michael D'Amico appears besides Fat Tony. ("The Mook, the Chef, the Wife and Her Homer")
- The Springfield Post Office appears. ("Blood Feud")
Trivia[edit]
- A family tries a couch at Get It and Regret It Hardware store, imitating a simple Simpson family couch gag.
