When Bleeding Gums Murphy was a guest on The Tonight Show with Steve Allen as the host, he read poetry and did an advertisement for his books while Bleeding Gums played a sax solo.

The book's title is a pun on The Joy of Cooking, which has been in print since the 1930s.
