Cultural references
Opening Sequence
- The opening sequence, including the music, is a reference to The Munsters:
G-G-Ghost D-D-Dad
- The title G-G-Ghost D-D-Dad is a reference to the movie Ghost Dad.
- All the ways that Homer is almost killed is similar to deaths in the Final Destination series.
- The baby buggy rolling down the stairs is a reference to the Odessa Steps sequence in the film Battleship Potemkin.
Scary Tales Can Come True
- "Scary Tales Can Come True" is a reference to the opening line in the song "Young at Heart": "Fairy tales can come true".
- The followed Fairytale characters make an appearance in "Scary Tales Can Come True":
- Rapunzel
- Troll from Three Billy Goats Gruff
- The Three Bears
- Goldilocks
- The Witch from Hansel and Gretel.
- Goldilocks' blood coming from underneath the door is a reference to The Leopard Man
Night Of The Dolphin
- The way the dolphins attack Lenny is similar to how Jaws killed Crissy.
- The dolphins squeak "Sound Off"
- The first part of the episode is a quote from the movie "Free Willy". Almost identical to the movie is the scene of the jump of the stone barrier and escape into the sea of the dolphin.
- Grandpa being eaten by the dolphin is similar to the sequence in A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors.
- The way the dolphins watch the Springfieldians is the same as in The Birds.
- Comic Book Guy's beatdown by a dolphin parodies a scene from Raging Bull
Trivia
- In UK Channel 4 broadcasts, the TV at the end of the opening sequence has nothing on it.
- The tune the dolphins squeak to is the tune Bart and his army sung to in "Bart the General".
- Snorky's statement that Dolphins once lived on the land is actually true as early Cetaceas (Dolphins and Whales) had legs and lived like Crocodilians.
- This is the second Halloween episode in a row (third in all, if counting "Treehouse of Horror VII") with the third segment ending in the world doomed.
- Strangely, the only people who pulled out firearms were the police force, even though it has been shown that nearly everyone in Springfield carries at least one weapon.
