Cultural references

Opening sequence

• The opening sequence is a parody of 127 Hours.
  • Homer gets his arm trapped like Aron Ralston and gnaws through several limbs, before gnawing through his trapped arm. Ralston had to amputate his own arm to get released.
  • 127 Hours is also referenced in the episode "The Blue and the Gray", where Homer tries to chew through his leg when he is unable to untie his foot from a bedpost. After knawing on his leg for a few secounds he declares he only has "127 hours to go!"
• Maggie pops out of Bart's astronaut costume in a reference to the Chestburster in Alien.
• The music that plays as Homer drives through town with the candy he believes he has stolen is the same music that plays in the movie Psycho as Marion Crane drives through town with the stolen $40,000.
• The tombstones outside, when Bart, Lisa and Maggie arrive home, show:

  • Bleeding Gums Murphy
  • Maude Flanders

The Diving Bell and Butterball

• The segment is a parody of The Diving Bell and Butterfly.
• The Brothers Karamazov is a real life book.
• Homer gets bitten by a spider and becomes a parody of Spider-Man.
• The cast of Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark are seen.
• Homer's quotes in the beginning are from the movie Memento when Leonard Shelby wakes up in the motel.

Dial D for Diddily

• The title is a reference to Dial M for Murder.
• The segment is a parody of Dexter.
  • The music in the segment was the "Dexter" theme by Rolfe Kent.
• The scene where Ned kills Patty and Selma is a parody of Wile E. Coyote and Road Runner of Looney Tunes.
• When Ned says he is going to hell and "my handbasket seats two" he is referring to the expression "going To hell in a handbasket" and means he is taking Homer with him.

In the Na’Vi

• The segment is a parody of the film Avatar.
  • The floating mountains are seen, except they are actually falling.
  • All the creatures and nature attack the humans as they do in the film.
  • The machines used by the humans to fight are very similar to those from the film.
  • Hillarium is a parody of Unobtanium, a rare mineral wanted in the film.
  • Bart is a parody of Jake Sully and Kamala is a parody of Neytiri.
• The name is a reference to the song, "In the Navy" and the Na'vi, the alien species in Avatar.
• Cletus asks if they're in Kansas any more, a reference to The Wizard of Oz.
• Kamala says there is no Rigellian word for "yours" or "mine", then a Rigellian says that that's why they didn't enjoy the movie, Yours, Mine and Ours.
• When Kamala crashes into the tree, she falls down the trunk like a Wacky WallWalker.
• The vortex Bart traverses is similar to Doctor Who's time vortex.

Credits

• After the three segments, when all the characters are gathering on the stage, Grampa walks on and asks when they'll be doing the Black Swan.
• Dan Castellaneta's scary name is a reference to the 1920s horror film The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari.
• Don Barrozo's scary name is a reference to the 1978 horror film Dawn of the Dead.

Trivia

• One of the robbers looks like one of the robbers thwarted by Everyman in "Homer the Whopper".
