• The title of the episode is a reference to the fictional character Atticus Finch from the 1960 novel To Kill a Mockingbird.
  • Lisa is reading the novel in the episode. Later, Homer and her watch movie based on the novel. Afterwards Bart reads a parody of it called To Mock a Killing Bird.
• In the school play, Nelson plays a parody of Anton Chigurh from No Country for Old Men.
