The Simpsons Down Under was a themed attraction based on the animated television series The Simpsons, located at the Fox Studios Backlot in Moore Park, Sydney, Australia. It opened on November 7, 1999, as part of the Fox Studios Backlot theme park and was one of the complex's two principal attractions, alongside The Titanic Experience. The attraction was based primarily on the sixth-season episode "Bart vs. Australia" and incorporated physical sets, a walk-through Springfield environment, motion-capture technology, and specially produced animation.^[1][2]

Fox Studios Australia opened the Fox Studios Backlot on November 7, 1999, as an entertainment complex combining film-themed attractions, interactive demonstrations, and television and movie-related experiences. Contemporary coverage identified The Simpsons Down Under as the Backlot's principal attraction for The Simpsons franchise.^[1][3]

The attraction was based on "Bart vs. Australia," which originally aired during the sixth season of The Simpsons in 1995. Fox Studios Australia contacted members of the The Simpsons writing staff and asked them to develop a screenplay for an attraction based on the episode. The resulting presentation was re-edited and re-animated and contained newly produced scenes.^[4][5][6]

The attraction combined physical environments with an animated presentation. Visitors could enter a recreation of the Simpsons' home before proceeding through a representation of downtown Springfield. The environment included locations such as Moe's Bar and Android's Dungeon, while character voices could be heard making jokes as visitors moved through the attraction.^[1][6]

The attraction included "live" Simpsons sets, including the family's living room and sofa. Visitors subsequently reached a stage where a motion-capture demonstration took place. A host wearing a specially designed suit performed movements that were reproduced by an animated Simpsons character displayed on a screen.^[7]

The motion-capture technology was a central feature of the attraction. Visitors could be incorporated into a re-edited and re-animated presentation based on "Bart vs. Australia." The attraction's technology could transform audience members' faces and expressions into moving cartoon characters.^[1][6]

The attraction featured a modified version of "Bart vs. Australia" rather than simply presenting the original television episode. The episode was re-edited and re-animated, with additional scenes produced specifically for the attraction. The project is referenced in the DVD commentary for "Bart vs. Australia" and in subsequent accounts of the episode.^[1][6]

Bart and Tobias

Plot[edit]

The Simpson family arrived at the home of Bruno Drundridge and his son, Tobias. Bruno demanded that Homer pay the $900 he owed him. Homer refused, leading the two men into a heated argument filled with insults and threats. Bart apologized for what had happened earlier, but Bruno insisted that Homer pay the money. As the argument continued, Lisa remarked that her father was fluent in swearing in five languages.

Later, Bart and Tobias headed into the outback to help round up some escaped kangaroos. Bart tried to use his slingshot to catch them, but Tobias showed him how to use a larger one. During the chase, one of the kangaroos stole Bart's slingshot. Bart and Tobias pursued it to get it back. They eventually returned to the house when it was time for dinner.

Later, both families gathered to eat and drink Australian beer. Homer agreed to try one of the beers after boasting that he had once drunk an entire trash can full of eggnog. During the barbecue, Homer played around with the shrimp on the grill. One of his movements sent a shrimp flying, causing an accident that set off a chain reaction.

The incident reached the gas network and triggered a series of explosions across Australia. The destruction reached the Sydney Opera House, and eventually the entire country was blown to pieces. The Simpsons were left standing on fragments of land floating in the water. As they looked at a huge whirlpool where Australia had once stood, Bart pointed out that it was spinning counterclockwise, and they began laughing.

Production[edit]

The attraction's use of motion capture reflected Fox Studios Australia's emphasis on demonstrating film and television production techniques throughout the Backlot. The Simpsons Down Under was one of its two large attractions and specifically identifies motion capture as one of its defining technologies.^[8]

The attraction also incorporated merchandise and souvenir photography. Visitors could purchase a variety of Simpsons merchandise, including composite photographs.^[1]

Closure[edit]

The Fox Studios Backlot experienced financial difficulties during its operation and ultimately closed in 2001, approximately two years after opening. The Simpsons Down Under therefore had a relatively short operating period.^[8]

Because the attraction closed more than two decades ago, much of its original promotional material and documentation is no longer readily available. However, contemporary descriptions, photographs and surviving video footage provide evidence of its appearance and operation.

Legacy[edit]

The Simpsons Down Under is notable for combining the series with a live theme-park experience and motion-capture technology. The attraction preceded the later The Simpsons Ride attractions at Universal Studios and represents one of the earlier major attempts to create an interactive, location-specific Simpsons attraction.^[4][1][6][9]
