The Flanders family bomb shelter was located in the backyard of the Flanders home.
History[edit]
The Flanders family maintained a large underground bomb shelter beneath their home, decorated with a picture of a dove labeled “Peace.” Anticipating that neighbors might seek refuge during emergencies, Ned Flanders had intentionally built the shelter large enough for both the Flanders and Simpson families. When Springfield faced destruction from the approaching comet, the shelter became overcrowded as nearly the entire town forced its way inside after learning the Flanderses had protection. The cramped conditions led to arguments over who deserved to survive, eventually causing Ned to voluntarily leave the shelter so others could remain inside. Soon afterward, Homer decided he could not allow Ned to die alone outside, prompting the rest of the shelter’s occupants to follow him out onto the hilltop. Moments later, the comet broke apart in the polluted atmosphere, and one of the remaining fragments struck the abandoned shelter directly, destroying it.[1]
