Sports Team Information
|
The Springfield Isotopes are Springfield's only minor league baseball team.
Profile[edit]
| This section mentions content from multiple continuities. Therefore, it is possible for different information to be correct depending on the episode or season. |
The team plays at the Double-A level[1] and is often shown as drastically underfunded and struggling in competition. However, the team has also been shown to play in the Major League.[2] They had a record 26-game losing streak.[3] Their home games are played at the Springfield War Memorial Stadium (which Homer Simpson simply calls "Springfield Stadium"),[3] Duff Stadium,[1] and Isotope Stadium.[4] The Isotopes name is most likely in reference to the Springfield Nuclear Power Plant. Homer was the Isotopes mascot for a brief period.[3] At various points, the team has been owned by Antoine Tex O'Hara,[3] the mafia,[1] and the Duff Corporation.[1]
History[edit]
The Isotopes have been around since at least 1944. The players on the team got out of World War II by faking illnesses, leaving them to play against teams of children and seniors. One of the players at the time was Fake Cough Johnson.[2]
The low quality of the team, combined with its financial difficulties, prompted management to consider moving the team. Homer once learned that there were plans to move the team to Albuquerque and staged a hunger strike to prevent it. Springfield became aware of the plans to move the team due to Homer's efforts and the premature roll-out of food packaging with "Albuquerque Isotopes" written on them. Albuquerque decided to reverse the decision to move the team.[1]
After the Isotopes signed Buck Mitchell, they entered first place in the league. However, due to marital troubles, Buck started to play badly. As his marital issues kept changing, Buck kept switching between playing well and playing badly. Eventually, he and his wife made up, but it is unknown if the Isotopes won the league.[4]
After star player Aeropos Walkov expressed interest in moving to the USA to play baseball, Grampa and Moe recorded a video to convince him to join the Isotopes. The video convinced him and he moved to Springfield to join the team. The Isotopes saw a surge in popularity after the signing and became sponsored by many gambling and betting companies. Walkov himself took part in betting on the Isotopes' own games, which is against baseball regulations. After he and Moe came clean about the gambling at a press conference, Walkov was cleared of wrongdoing as the blame was placed solely on Moe. Walkov then left the Isotopes to join the San Francisco Draft-Pigs.[2]
