- The title of the episode is a reference to the film Better Off Dead.
- The statue of Abe in France has a reference to WW2 General George S. Patton.
- When Ned Flanders starts praying in Skinner's office, Superintendent Chalmers breaks an emergency cabinet that hold the Engel v. Vitale case. This ruled that it is unconstitutional for state officials to compose an official school prayer and encourage its recitation in public schools, due to violation of the first amendment.
- Comic Book Guy is dressed as Shrek.
- Bart blames Ned for taking him fishing without bringing Ritalin.
- Ned Flanders riddled with arrows is a reference to Saint Sebastian.
- Bart sings "Amazing Grace" at the First Church of Springfield.
