Cultural references[edit]
- Mr. Burns moves with the style of the Pink Panther when he is about to enter the Complex Medical Care. The background music is similar to the music from the cartoon.
- Burns reads Men's Health and other magazines parody of it.
- The people attending Dr. Nussbaum's funeral threw visitation stones at Mr. Burns. In Judaism, these stones are left on graves in an act of remembrance or respect for the deceased.
- Professor Frink used his VR headset "Oculus Frink" that placed him in the "116th Nobel Prize" awards:
- The Oculus Frink is a parody of the Oculus Rift.
- The March No. 1 from the Pomp and Circumstance Marches can be heard.
- Queen Sonja of Norway presents the awards to him.
- Frink mentions HBO and the Higgs boson observatory.
- At the "Nobel Afterpary", an ice sculpture in the shape of Alfred Nobel is filled with Absolut Vodka. Both are Swedish.
- "The Blue Danube" is briefly heard in Burns' VR scenario on the moon.

- On Burns' wall of trophies the head of Big Bird from Sesame Street can be seen.
- Milhouse and Kirk mention the Barbie fashion doll.
- When Smithers changes the heads of Maggie, Lisa and Bart to Mr. Burns' head in VR. Burns thinks that is as good as having a "Supreme Court full of Scalias". Antonin Scalia was an originalist who held the Constitution of the United States should be interpreted as it meant to those who wrote it, not considering new or changing circumstances.
- Other switched heads include: Zoidberg from Futurama, Abraham Lincoln and Mr. Potato Head from Toy Story.
- Burns can be seen doing the Nazi salute and goose-stepping in the background.
- The song that plays when Homer is home alone and during the ending is "I Feel Free" by Cream.
- Homer watches the entire collection of the Police Academy movies on TV.
- Homer references Snoopy while naked on the roof in Snoopy's usual position on top of his dog house.
- Marge references Spider-Man saying "My spouse senses are tickling", referencing his phrase "My spider senses are tingling".
- Lisa imitates American actress Katharine Hepburn when she was having an argument with Mr. Burns.
- The scene of Homer and Julia eating spaghetti is a parody of the famous scene from Lady and the Tramp.
- In Burns' future VR scenario, Bart attended Harvard University.
- The Wilhelm scream is heard in Hell.
- The legitimate diplomas in Nick Riviera's VR fantasy are from University of Michigan, Harvard Medical School, Johns Hopkins University, Columbia University, Brown University, Yale University, UCLA and the University of Oxford.
