World War I was a global military conflict from 1914 to 1918.
History
Bart wanted to buy Radioactive Man #1 comic book so went over to Mrs. Glick's house to do some chores. He saw a yellowed photo of a World War I serviceman and asked who he was and Mrs. Glick answered, "Oh, that's my brother Asa. He was killed in the great war. Held a grenade too long."[1]
In one Treehouse of Horror segment that took place in the 1930s, Abe Simpson had fought in this war. Lenny asked why he kept calling it "the FIRST World War", as before WWII, this war was called "the Great War".
