Both the boat and the crew members in Skinner's memory resemble those in the film Apocalypse Now

• The title of the The Itchy & Scratchy Show episode "My Bloody Valentine" is a reference to the 1981 film My Bloody Valentine.

• Ex-president Jimmy Carter and his wife Rosalynn attended Krusty's 29th Anniversary show.
• In one of Krusty's clips, American poet Robert Frost is reading his poem "Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening". Suddenly, Krusty interrupts him and says "Hey, Frosty! How'd you like some snow, man?", a reference to Frosty the Snowman.
• In his 1973 Psychedelic rock clip, "Kroon Along With Krusty", Krusty performs "Break On Through (To the Other Side)" by The Doors.
• The clip where Sideshow Mel "wacked out on wowie-sauce" tells off Krusty is a reference to Ed McMahon appearing to be intoxicated on The Tonight Show on April 8, 1977.

  • Bart also mentions former US president Chester A. Arthur.
• Ralph portrays George Washington while Lisa is Martha Washington.
• The song "America the Beautiful" is played at the end of the act.

Trivia

• Ralph is revealed to be Chief Wiggum's son.
• At one point, Ralph states that he is going to marry Lisa. Ironically, in "Lisa the Simpson", Lisa fantasises about being married to Ralph

Goofs

• Up until the presidents play, Lewis is given yellow skin, brown hair and a pink shirt.
• After Homer says "I'd sell my first-born son", the view switches to a close-up of Bart saying "Hey!", who has suddenly gained a can of Buzz Cola and a thin silver implement in his hands, which were empty in the previous scene. This, and the following shot of Homer, were reused from Dog of Death.
