Cultural references
- The title and main plot are a reference to the novel and film The Exorcist.
- While possessed, Lisa sings a number of songs by Madonna including: Like a Virgin (backwards), Material Girl and Papa Don't Preach.
- Bart plays a console which resembles a Game Boy.
- Maggie is seen ripping up a magazine called Cosmelle, a reference to Cosmopolitan.
- The role-playing game played by the Simpson and Flanders children appears to be based off Dungeons & Dragons.
