[[Mr. Burns]] announced a project intended to block out the sun to increase demand for artificial lighting and heating. [[Waylon Smithers]] objected, warning that the environmental consequences would be severe and that even the town's sundial would become useless. After a heated exchange, Smithers refused to support the plan and was dismissed from his position. Burns then continued with the project, destroying parts of a model of the town while celebrating its progress. Later, once the sun-blocking system was activated, the town was plunged into dim light.
