The concept was introduced at the 2022 [[D23]] Expo as a planned series of interconnected films referred to as “Phase 5.” The proposed slate included films centered on characters such as [[Moe Szyslak]], [[Captain McCallister]], [[Groundskeeper Willie]], [[Selma Bouvier]] and [[Bart Simpson]].

After asking the audience whether they wanted another movie and receiving an enthusiastic response, Homer announced the creation of the Simpsons Cinematic Universe and introduced its “Phase 5.”

The initial lineup consisted of several proposed films, including ''[[Iron Moe]]'', ''[[Sea Captain America]]'', ''[[Groundskeepers of the Galaxy]]'', ''[[SelmaVision]]'' and ''[[Moon Knight]]. Promotional posters for the projects were presented as part of the announcement.

The announcement was interrupted when Homer was informed that he had received a telephone call from Marvel Studios president {{ch|Kevin Feige}}. Homer initially reacted positively to the call and indicated that he wanted to proceed with the proposed projects. He subsequently reversed his decision, and the word “CANCELLED” appeared across the posters for the announced films. Homer then stated that there would be “no new movie.” He followed this by saying “Unless…”, after which a poster for ''[[Nedpool]]''.
