''The Walking Dead'' franchise began in 2003 with the black-and-white {{w|The Walking Dead (comic book)|comic book series}}. The comic book series built a substantial fanbase and won several awards, and in 2010 {{w|AMC (TV channel)|AMC}} began airing a {{w|The Walking Dead (TV series)|television series}} based on the comic book. The franchise has since spawned diverse other media, including:
*A companion TV series, ''{{w|Fear the Walking Dead}}'', which began in 2015.

Robert Kirkman has said on several occasions that in the ''Walking Dead'' universe, fellow human survivors should be considered just as great a threat as the undead.

''The Walking Dead'' has been referred to several times in various ''Simpsons'' media.
